[EU+ Series “Europe – A Year of Fateful Elections?”] Europe in November 2017 – The Voters Have Spoken
60 years after its foundation by the Treaties of Rome, the EU faces enormous challenges. Not least among them is the rise of neo-nationalist sentiment and even of parties hostile to its structure and fundamental democratic values. At the same time, it shows signs of a remarkable economic recovery and renewed enthusiasm for the ‘European Project’ as a whole.
The EAP has followed changes of public opinion by observing various national elections this year, notably in the Netherlands, France and the UK, most recently also in Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic. This roundtable discussion with European top diplomats in Hong Kong will try to assess the current state of the EU and prospects for the future political, social and economic development of Europe in the years to come.
