Introduction:

More than a million migrants and refugees crossed into Europe in 2015. The migration crisis in Europe has continued to spread in 2016, with member states of the EU struggling to cope with the influx that has resulted in widespread divisions over how best to resettle people.

This public lecture investigates three central and interrelated themes that the migration crisis has raised. The first speaker provides a unique perspective on the migration crisis, outlining the numbers behind the crisis. The first speaker then outlines the significance of the immigration crisis amongst European publics, with populist Extreme Right-Wing Parties in France, Hungary, the UK, Poland and Sweden surging in the polls and seeking to exploit the crisis for their own electoral gains. The second speaker outlines the migration crisis and how it has affected Germany and other European Union member states, in how best to resettle migrants and refugees fleeing war torn countries. The final speaker provides a unique European perspective, outlining how the migration crisis has impacted countries in Eastern Europe such as Poland and the wider implications this poses for the European Union project.
