Summary:

Attended by more than a hundred participants, the Smarter Than Car briefing session won a round of applause as they were inspired by ground-breaking ideas along with innovative measures to flourish their minds on urban innovations.

This seminar covered a range of topics regarding post-carbon economy, mobility, and sustainability. Mr. Florian Lorenz, the Executive Director of the think tank Smarter Than Car, started off by explaining how the think tank came up with an action plan on developing Bicycle Urbanism and Future Urban Mobility in Beijing, China and Vienna, Austria. He also presented how current vision of urbanism dominated by private car use was promoted in the midst of XX century and supported by car industries, for example through Futurama exhibition in 1939. Knowing that natural resources are limited and we are now moving toward post-oil era the approach has to be changed and innovative solutions implemented. Mr. Lorenz highlighted the need to use similar ‘imagineering’ tools to present alternative future with fossil-fuel free mobility, and discuss means to make this vision a reality. Moderated by Prof. Hans Werner Hess, the discussion panel brought up what challenges authorities and non-governmental organizations in Hong Kong, China, and beyond are facing to improve transport systems and make them more sustainable. The challenges were compared with experiences of the city of Vienna and its plan for post-carbon mobility by 2050. Finally, the discussants debated how to successfully promote sustainable mobility ideas among general public.

About:

In the last century, our cities were designed for a future based on individual car transport. We know today that this has been destructive, impaired the urban quality of life and is in the long run not sustainable. We are in urgent need to prepare our urban environment for a cleaner, more resource-efficient future when oil will no longer be so readily available. Some global cities are already forerunners in the transition towards a post-carbon economy and life style.

This discussion forum presents Vienna’s mobility & transport systems and discusses development strategies for a post-fossil future up to the year 2050. They ask how the transition to post-carbon urban mobility might foster sustainability, resilience, and security while improving quality of life. They suggest that a shift beyond oil is necessary and vital for maintaining resilient urban environments. They present models of living and mobility that require no fossil-fuel energy input.

This seminar relates to the exhibition Smarter Than Car – Urban Mobility After Cars and Oil.
