Sustainable Community Project – 2nd Prize: Group 7

This group took action to encourage encouraging sustainable energy habits in the everyday lives of students in their schools.

In Berlin the students encouraged the use of renewable energy sources by supplying solar-powered cell phone chargers for free usage and encouraging the reduction of energy usage by organizing “The Day of the Indoor Eclipse,” during which no lights will be turned on in school. In Hong Kong the students encouraged saving energy by biking to school, and the final results were presented by means of an informational presentation.

Judges’ comments:

Sustainable Community Project - 2nd Prize: Group 7

“With a theme on “Encouraging Sustainable Energy Habits”, the Hong Kong side focussed on introducing a concept of Bicycle City, and the Berlin side on Solar-powered phone chargers along with a "no lights day". The judges particularly enjoyed the Hong Kong effort in teaching people how to widen the use of bikes, while the Berlin students also took real action in school, encouraging the turning off of lights, and drawing the school's attention to the cause and action.”

“A special mention goes to the Berlin side who translated action into the immediate community in a way that would generate interest to the neighbour, something that everyone can practice. On the whole, the project showed good reflections on the beginning of sustainability, and asked the right questions addressing the different levels of action. It provided and showed good thinking.”
