This blog competition was EUAP’s first activity organized for secondary school students. It aimed to arouse students’ awareness towards the local environmental issues, as well as to offer students a self-learning opportunity through a fun and creative way. Participants were required to write a blog article on either “Towards a Bike City – Urban Cycling in Hong Kong” or “Towards a Zero-Waste City – Waste Reduction in Hong Kong”. The most challenging part is that they needed to make comparison between European countries and Hong Kong and came up with creative ideas to improve the current situation.
The competition was held from February to 26th April 2014. We have received a number of entries from students of 5 different secondary schools, namely Fukien Secondary School (Siu Sai Wan), Heep Yunn School, HKMA David Li Kwok Po College, Holy Trinity College and Wa Ying College. In general, the entries were with high quality. All participants have shown efforts in gathering and organizing useful materials related to the topics required. Among all participants, Simrandeep Kaur, Pan Li Ju and Yum Yen Tong has won the “Best Blog Entry” prizes (in alphabetic order), and a group of 5 students from Wa Ying College has won the “Honorable Recognition” prize.

Pan Li-ju: “I tried riding bicycles on bike lanes in Hong Kong once, I only felt dangerous instead of relaxed… I see there is plenty of room for further development… I hope the government could put more resources on urban cycling which would improve the quality of life and at the same time, protect the environment. This is the responsibility we have to shoulder as a global citizen.”
Each winner of “Best Blog Entry” has received a Page One gift card of $1,000 and a book selected by EUAP team, and the group winner of “Honorable Recognition” has received book vouchers of $500 in total. The level of competition entries was unexpectedly high, showing that Hong Kong students are creative and aware of current issues in the society. Over 50 participants attended the ceremony.
