The German city of Essen has won the European Green Capital Award for 2017. Essen was singled out for its exemplary practices in protecting and enhancing nature and biodiversity and efforts to reduce water consumption. Essen participates in a variety of networks and initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to improve the city’s resilience in the face of climate change.

Plastic bags are a major source of pollution, but also a threat to wildlife on a global scale. The EU wants to stop this. On Tuesday 28 April Members of the European Parliament debated and voted on new rules to limit the use of lightweight plastic bags. Find out more details here!

The world’s first solar-powered bike path has officially opened on November 12 in Krommenie, a town northwest of Amsterdam. In future, the solar power from the road will be used for street lighting, traffic systems, electric cars and households!

EU leaders committed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 40%, and increase energy efficiency and renewables by at least 27% by 2030.

Over these two days (23rd & 24th October) the EU’s 28 government leaders are meeting in Brussels over the “Climate Summit” to discuss energy issues as well as the “EU 2030 Package”.
