Event Description:
Synopsis
In this introducing presentation the fundamental prerequisites and conditions of HafenCity and IBA are being explained. Hamburg is facing a constant growth in economic dynamic and population over the last two decades. Shortage of housing is therefore an urgent political issue, now being aggravated tremendously due to the flux of migrants and refugees.
As a fundamental consequence the Senat of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg decided to reinforce housing production, including at least 1/3 social housing. In order to avoid the failures of suburban housing mass production of the 60th and 70th, the inner city resources of urban development are supposed to be developed priority. HafenCity and IBA are the key-projects of this strategy of “Building the City within the City”. Both projects are dedicated explicitly to urbanistic, ecological and socio-cultural targets, being codified in three principles:
– Growing City
– Smart City
– Open City.
The presentation will show, how these objectives are going to be operationalized and implemented, and which role in particular the specific format of an International Building Exhibition (IBA) plays.
