Event Description: Achieving urban innovation success is foremost a question of good city governance and its underlying ethical principles. About a third of Vienna’s population today lives in ‘social housing’, owned or subsidized by the City.

This introduction outlines Vienna’s historical tradition of building for the needs of its citizens, key features of housing policy and its changes over time. Social housing has become a key vehicle for urban democratization and is a major factor behind Vienna’s global ranking as the city with the top ‘Quality of Living’.
